To freelance or not to freelance?

Over the past 10 years I experienced a few forms of employment. I’ve worked for a small agency, for a large organisation and freelanced (though not necessarily in that order).

Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The small organisation; you get to know people quicker and it takes a lot less time to establish yourself as a capable person. The large organisation has more resources to put into place adaptations in the workplace, but it is a lot harder to gain acceptance and even harder too move up the hierarchy.

Freelancing on the other hand, whilst socially isolating and financially not particularly rewarding, I have found to be the perfect solution for me.

Why?

Well, as my own boss I don’t have to explain why I need to eat frequently. As my own boss, I don’t have to explain to myself why I get cold and need a well-heated room. As my own boss I don’t have to explain why I need time off to go to that particular hospital appointment.

I could also take the afternoon off and not have to contend with stares that insinuated I was a slacker because I was genuinely too tired or in a lot of pain and needed a rest. Working to a timetable of completing work on the evening, feeling much more refreshed and in most cases, far more productive. It was easier to be working at my own pace.

I guess you have to weigh the pros and cons up of each type of employment and figure out which one you can make most allowances for. Personally, the rose-tinted glasses make freelancing look very appealing. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side.
